2019 $1 Mutiny & Rebellion - The Eureka Stockade Unc Coin Card
The 1854 Eureka Stockade rebellion in Ballarat, Victoria, was a pivotal moment that reshaped Australia's government.
This one-dollar uncirculated coin commemorates the miners' uprising against the government, symbolized by the iconic Eureka flag, which remains a powerful emblem of egalitarianism in Australia.
The goldfields of Victoria in the 1850s were harsh and volatile. Miners frequently clashed with police as the government imposed heavy fees and strict regulations, fueling tensions and sparking the possibility of revolt.
In November 1854, under the leadership of Peter Lalor, rebellious miners erected a wooden stockade at Ballarat and raised the newly created Eureka flag. On December 3rd, 1854, violence erupted as police and soldiers launched a well-armed assault on the stockade. At least 30 miners and five police officers were killed, with innocent bystanders also caught in the chaos.
Though the miners were ultimately defeated, their rebellion captured public sympathy and led to a government inquiry into their grievances. The Eureka flag endures as a symbol of the uprising that helped transform Australia's democracy.
The coin's design reflects the intensity and significance of the Eureka Stockade rebellion.
