2025 Aussie Big Things 2 $1 AlBr Uncirculated – The Big Penguin
The Big Penguin, standing three metres tall, welcomes visitors to the foreshore of Penguin, a charming town on Tasmania’s north coast and the traditional lands of the Tommeginne people. Built in 1975 from ferro-cement and coated in fibreglass, the statue was unveiled to mark the centenary of the township’s proclamation.
Originally established as a timber town in the 1860s, Penguin takes its name from the nearby rookeries of the world’s smallest penguin, the Little Penguin (Eudyptula novaehollandiae), which grows to just 30 centimetres in height. In that sense, this towering landmark could just as well be called the Big Little Penguin—a playful nod to the town’s unique namesake.
