2025 Aussie Big Things 2 $1 AlBr Uncirculated – The Big Barramundi

Wanguri, a northern suburb of Darwin in the Northern Territory, sits on the traditional lands and waterways of the Larrakia people. Within the grounds of Wanguri Primary School stands the striking Big Barramundi—a vibrant four-metre-long sculpture created by Chilean-born Darwin artist Techy Masero.

Built from steel and cement, the artwork was completed in 2010, with its intricate mosaic tiles added in collaboration with the school’s students. The barramundi was chosen to honour the Larrakia, the Saltwater People, and the Wanguri custodians of Darwin and north-east Arnhem Land. Appropriately, the sculpture bears the name Damibilia, the Larrakia word for barramundi.

Today, the Big Barramundi is more than just a colourful landmark. It serves as the logo of Wanguri Primary School, proudly reflecting its multicultural spirit and its motto: “hooked on learning.”
