Marking a Milestone: Celebrating 60 Years of the Royal Australian Mint

In 1965, Australia marked a new chapter in its history with the opening of the Royal Australian Mint, a key milestone in the nation’s shift to decimal currency. Officially inaugurated by HRH Prince Philip, the Mint quickly became a symbol of Australia’s dedication to innovation and excellence in coin production.

Construction began in 1963 under architect Richard Ure, requiring over a million bricks and 12,000 cubic yards of concrete. During excavation, workers unexpectedly encountered solid stone beneath the surface—an ideal natural foundation for securing the Mint’s vaults.

Established to produce decimal currency, the Mint has since struck over 14 billion circulating and collector coins, leaving a lasting impact both nationally and globally. Its craftsmanship has earned prestigious awards for design, innovation, and tourism.

This coin’s design celebrates the Mint’s role in shaping Australia’s numismatic heritage, paying homage to both its production processes and the skilled artisans behind every coin. Created by the Mint’s Adam Ball, the design honors six decades of excellence. Adam reflects, “The hidden narrative pays tribute to the craftsmanship and precision behind every coin produced.” The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorn.
