2017 $1 Battle of Beersheba Uncirculated Coin

On 31 October 1917, Australian troops from the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments launched a daring assault on Ottoman defensive positions in Beersheba, charging under artillery and rifle fire. Crossing several kilometers of open land without cover, they fearlessly stormed the Ottoman lines, ultimately defeating the garrison and capturing the town.

This remarkable act of bravery was matched by the extraordinary endurance of the warhorses, which covered more than twice the distance of the Melbourne Cup and leaped over wide defensive trenches to overwhelm the enemy. Despite suffering losses—31 dead, 36 wounded, and many fallen horses—the victory was hard-fought and costly.

The Charge of the Light Horsemen is meticulously depicted on this commemorative coin, honoring the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba.

Key features include:
- Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba.
- Reverse design capturing the intensity of mounted warfare, with Light Horsemen at full charge across the arid Middle Eastern landscape.
- Limited mintage of 20,000 bronze uncirculated coins.

This moving design honors the courage and sacrifice of the Light Horsemen during the legendary charge.
