Born in 1854, Edward 'Ned' Kelly was the first son of an Irish Catholic couple.

In his teens, Ned mustered cattle and broke in horses, but swiftly graduated to the crimes of cattle duffing and horse stealing. Accused of the attempted murder of a trooper in 1878, Ned and Dan Kelly found that a reward of £100 had been placed on their heads. Taking to the bush with Joe Byrne and Steve Hart, Ned and Dan saw the reward raised to £2,000 for each member of the Kelly Gang after the death of three troopers who had ambushed the men at Stringybark Creek.

After raids on Euroa and Jerilderie, the Kelly Gang's 'last stand took place in Glenrowan, where they took 60 hostages in a hotel. Dan Kelly, Byrne and Hart were killed, with a wounded Ned arrested.

Ned Kelly was sentenced to death by Judge Redmond Barry. Despite protests from thousands of people, Ned was executed at Melbourne Gaol in 1880.
